Searching for “SAP friendly trucking companies” usually turns up forum threads from three years ago and job boards that never say whether the carrier actually takes SAP drivers. Meanwhile you're calling recruiter after recruiter, repeating the hardest part of your story, and getting hung up on.
That's the part we handle. When you tell us where you are in the return-to-duty process, we go to the carriers in our network who hire at that exact stage — instead of sending you to apply blind and find out on the phone.
What “SAP friendly” actually means
The Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) return-to-duty process is federally defined: evaluation by a qualified SAP, completion of the education or treatment they prescribe, a follow-up evaluation, and a negative return-to-duty test before you can legally operate a commercial vehicle again. After that you stay on a follow-up testing plan the SAP sets, typically running one to five years.
Carriers sit in different places on this. Some will only look at you once the return-to-duty test is passed and you're back in the Clearinghouse as eligible. Some will start the hiring conversation while you're still completing the program, so you can start driving the week you clear. A smaller group won't consider SAP drivers at all. None of them advertise which group they're in — that's why the search is so frustrating.
How we place SAP drivers
Tell us your status honestly on the application: SAP selected or not, program complete or in progress, return-to-duty test passed or pending, and how much of the follow-up schedule remains. That single answer decides which carriers we approach.
We're straight with you about the trade-offs, too. Coming back through SAP often means a shorter list of carriers and a starting rate below what a clean record commands. After twelve months of clean driving and testing, that list gets substantially longer — many drivers move to a better seat at the one-year mark.
What the work looks like
Most SAP-friendly openings we see are OTR dry van and reefer, running two to three weeks out with reset time at home. Regional runs exist and open up more readily once you have recent verifiable time back behind the wheel.
Pay is posted by the carrier, per mile or as a percentage of the load, and every live rate sits on our openings board rather than being buried in a phone call.
What you need to get started
- Valid CDL-A
- SAP process complete, or a clear picture of where you are in it
- Clean Clearinghouse status, or a documented return-to-duty date
- Willingness to stay on the SAP's follow-up testing schedule
- DOT physical and medical card in date
Tell us your situation once.
Three minutes on the application, and we take it to carriers that hire at your stage — no repeating the story to a dozen recruiters.
Common questions
Can I get a trucking job while still in the SAP program?
Sometimes. Certain carriers will begin the hiring process while you are completing the program, so you can start once your return-to-duty test is negative and the Clearinghouse shows you eligible. You cannot legally operate a commercial vehicle before that point. Tell us your exact stage and we will approach the carriers that hire at it.
Do SAP-friendly carriers pay less?
Often the starting rate is lower than what a clean record commands, and the list of carriers is shorter. Both improve considerably after about twelve months of clean driving and testing, and many drivers move to a better-paying seat at that point.
Will I still be drug tested more often?
Yes. Your SAP sets a follow-up testing schedule after the return-to-duty test, commonly running one to five years, and those tests are unannounced. Carriers expect this and build it into their process.
Do I have to tell the carrier about the SAP?
Yes, and it is far better coming from you. The FMCSA Clearinghouse shows your status to any carrier running a query, so it is never a surprise you can hold back. Drivers who are upfront place faster.
How long does placement usually take?
It depends on your stage. If your return-to-duty test is already passed and your record is otherwise clean, it typically moves at the same speed as any other placement. If you are mid-program, we line up the carrier so you can start as soon as you clear.
